About This Hike:  At 19,052 acres, Ohiopyle State Park is the largest of Pennsylvania’s many state parks and is best known for whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny River.  Last year, we had a great hike (in pouring rain) through the western part of the park; this hike will take us through the eastern section, showcasing some of the park’s most beautiful natural features.  Our hike will be two loops each of about 5 miles.  The first loop will take us to Baughman Rock overlook with a view of the Yough Gorge and the second loop will take us along scenic Meadow Run.

We’ll begin our hike at the Visitor Center & Train Station in Ohiopyle.  After a short walk on the rail trail, we’ll have short, steep climb and then a more gentle climb to the top of the ridge and lunch at the Baughman Rock overlook.  After lunch, we’ll take an easy bushwhack and then descend on Sugarloaf Trail back to Ohiopyle.  For the second loop, we’ll follow the Meadow Run Trail past the natural water slides and the Cascades Waterfall, eventually looping back to Ohiopyle.  We’ll finish our hike with a walk through town, passing the famous Ohiopyle Falls and finally ending up back at our cars.  Come early for a coffee and great shopping for outdoor gear at Wilderness Voyagers Outfitters near the tracks in Ohiopyle.  Dinner after the hike will be at Caileigh’s in Uniontown; our favorite.

Additional Information:  Do not reply!  If you would like to hike with us, just show up on time at the trailhead.  Goats, llamas, friends and well behaved relatives are welcome.  Weapons of any kind are not welcome.  For general information, see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).  Please let me know if you would like to be removed from our e-mail list.

The Winter Palace

Most people know more as they get older:

I give all that the cold shoulder.

I spent my second quarter-century

Losing what I had learnt at university.

And refusing to take in what had happened since.

Now I know none of the names in the public prints,

And am starting to give offence by forgetting faces

And swearing I've never been in certain places.

It will be worth it, if in the end I manage

To blank out whatever it is that is doing the damage.

Then there will be nothing I know.

My mind will fold into itself, like fields, like snow.
